I have the honour to acknowledge the re-

ceipt of your Despatch No. 260 of 16th. July enquiring whether

any scheme is under consideration for carrying out the project

of a bridge between Victoria and Kowloon.

No scheme has been formulated as the

extensive Public Works at present proposed will tax the re-

sources of the Colony for four or five years. But if the ex-

pansion of the City goes on at its present rate the question

of a bridge, or of an improved ferry system will ere long be-

come pressing.

On the 4th. September, 1901, I addressed

a letter to Vice-Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge on the subject,

a copy of which with his reply I enclose.

The bridge will, according to the rough

estimate of the Harbour Master cost Nine Millions of Dollars.

When the scheme comes to be formulated the question may fairly

be considered whether a contribution might not be given by

the Imperial Goverment equal to the value of the Colonial

and Military Land taken by the Imperial Goverment for Naval, purposes in

1896 without compensation to the Colony, which pays in addition

20% of its gross revenue as a Military Contribution. The area
